After draining the surrounding areas, from 1892 to 1910, a garden city with many villas in Liberty style and the Kursaal were built on the sea. From Mondello you get into the Marine Protected Area "Capo Gallo" - "Isola delle Femmine".

Fishermen and tourist village, inhabited for many centuries and developed around the tuna plant Calandria, between Monti and Pizzo Billiemi Santa Margherita.During some archaeological excavations in the caves Impiso, Pecoraro and Conza  paleolithic materials were discovered. At the beginning  the economy of the small town was concentrated on the sea, in the course of time  the people devoted themselves in agricultural activities, such as the cultivation of vineyards, myrtle. About the  sixteenth century  two defensive towers for the protection of constant attacks by pirates were built. One of the two towers was destroyed, today in its place stands  the highway Palermo - Punta Raisi.
After the eighteenth century, many small villas were built in the style of liberty, which made the city  a major tourist centre of Palermo. Although not many of these villas, because of the expansion of the city, remained, Sferracavallo retains its charm.
